The Farthest Seas

“…Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea—the Lord on high is mighty.”
Psalm 93:4, New International Version

There is something relentlessly powerful and beautiful about the sea as it breaks on the shore.  On the Oregon coast, as well as the redwood coast of the Pacific in far northern California, one can see small islands and huge rocks that were once connected to the mainland.  Slowly, yet relentlessly, the sea has eroded away the connection these now-solitary ocean sentinels had with the land.  Sometimes of course, the breakers are huge and mighty indeed in a ferocious storm, whole beaches can be moved or removed, and large trees uprooted.

It is an apt picture for the might of our God.  I need that reminder some days.  Great and momentous events can suddenly descend, and I am powerless to fend them off, much less defeat them.  Mightier than the breakers of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty.  He is also the Lord right here, Immanuel, God with me.

More often than not in my life it has been the slow ebb and flow of the “tide” of events, the every-day things that over time erodes God’s own vision for my life, that shifts the focus of my attention and reduces the power of hope.  However, our God is mighty then as well.  The Lord on high is mighty.

Growing up, I spent many weekend retreats on the Oregon coast with our youth group.  The ocean, and the wonderfully constant sound of the sea breaking on the sand, is a powerful memory of those formative experiences.  Just so, the Lord is constant in my life, and in your life.  Perhaps you don’t need that reminder today.  Know that the Lord is still with you.

The disciplines of being in the Scripture daily, in practicing God’s presence in prayer continuously, keep us connected to the mighty God.  Spend some time in the Scripture today.  Spend quantity time in prayer today.  Be refreshed by the Mighty God.
