A Child of God.

Every year, the Coca-Cola Company puts out a variety of bottles with individual names on them. When they first came out, all of the very common names graced the labels. If your name was Robert, John, Rachel or Rebecca, you could probably find it. Recently, I have noticed that a new variety of ethnic-specific variations, and common names with alternate spellings, are showing up…like Shayla, Jordan, Alejandro, and Garcia.

My name, however, is Darcia. I think I have seen Darcy, but Garcia is as close as it gets. I think my brothers, Deonte and Dalane, and my parents, Diamond and Eleda, will have to settle for ordering a specialized version from the online website if they must have one.

We are identified by our name. Many first, middle, and last names have significant meanings in many cultures. Some names represent family lines, specific places, cities, experiences, birth circumstances, or a child’s features. Biblical names had meanings as well, and were often used to communicate God’s message or to establish a religious affiliation.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6, English Standard Version

Although my name does not have a specific meaning associated with it, the important fact is that God knows me. My true identity is not wrapped up in my earthly name, but rather because I have been saved by the name of Jesus.

“She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus-
because he will save his people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21, English Standard Version

Your name may be common or it may be unique. You may love your name, despise it, or be indifferent about it, but always remember that God knows your name, and loves you for who he has created you to be!
