Earlier this week I had the pleasure of hiking through the Paint Mines in Calhan, Colorado. The colorful clay in these natural formations was used years ago by native Americans to make pottery and other items. Along with the beautiful colors, years of erosion was evident, leaving an interesting landscape of shapes. As we were hiking I was attempting to take pictures of the beautiful scenery around me. Sometimes the contrast of shadows and light made it difficult to see what I was aiming at through the camera lens.

When I arrived home and began looking through the pictures I took, I was amazed to see I had captured the moment a shaft of light had peeked through the formations to highlight the white stone at the center. Normally, standing in this area I would focus on the red layers of stone standing out from the white. However, this shaft of light brought my attention to the white stone formation. It has been smoothed and shaped into a thing of beauty through years of erosion. It is a beautiful piece of work that I would have missed without the light shining directly on it.

“The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
Psalm 19:1 English Standard Version

This is true of each of us as well. So often we go through the business of life unnoticed. We feel that there is nothing that makes us stand out from those around us. Yet if we are living our lives in the way God designed, He shines the light of His Glory in us and we reflect that light into the darkness that surrounds us. We are shaped by time and circumstances into a beautiful creation. All the hardships that we endure are used to form us into works of art that bring Him pleasure. We do not go unnoticed by God. Rather God waits for the right time to shine His light on us and reveal Himself. The artist takes great pleasure in the work He has created. Allow Him to reveal the great work He has done in you.
