A Place At The Table

Where we belong.

Our family entered a time of preparation recently. We are adopting a child from China. Like many families who enter the adoption process, nothing truly prepared us for the necessary paperwork, the document search, the notaries, and all of the little details that go into this process. In all the busy work our hearts can tend to lose sight of why we are doing this. There are ways of helping us to remember, though; a picture on my cell phone home screen, discussions and prayers with the family, and… setting an extra plate at dinner.

This is our child’s place tonight. He doesn’t even know it but we are all so excited for him to come and be part of our family. We talk about what he might be doing, dream about the transition for him, and hope that the process goes quickly and smoothly. (We don’t have crazy expectations, we know there will be difficult things, maybe VERY difficult things. But we hope for the best and pray.) He already has a place here in our hearts and at our table.

In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
John 14:2-3 (New American Standard Bible)

Jesus is even more excited to welcome us into His home that He has prepared for us. He went through much more than bureaucratic paperwork and red tape to adopt us into His family. It cost much more than any agency fee. We already have a place there at the table reserved for us. He sets the plate and eagerly anticipates the day of our welcome.

Maybe he even has your photo on His cell phone home screen.
