Peaceful Presence

Remaining Steady in the Storm.

Entering Palmer Park in Colorado Springs, Colorado, my hiking buddies and I noticed this figure of a young girl reading a book contentedly on a bench next to a Little Free Library. We thought it was cute and resolved to take some pictures of the scene when we returned from our hike. It was a beautiful morning – bright, though chilly – and we were eager to get moving.

Snow started falling lightly towards the middle of our hike, then rapidly at the end. We returned to the startling sight of this young girl in her summer dress, covered in snow, yet still eagerly reading. I didn’t notice the scarf when we first saw her, though it was likely there. She went from looking sweet and cheerful to a bit cold and pathetic.

Sometimes this is how I feel along my Christian journey. I can be at a place of peace with God, happily studying His word and being wherever He calls me. And then, while the world feels sunny all around me, suddenly a storm comes up out of nowhere, leaving me feeling cold and lonely. I hope that, during these times, I can remain trusting God with the same steadiness as this statue, reading her book.

“So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.”
1 Peter 4:19 New Living Translation

As children of God we will enter various trials and suffering just as Christ himself did. God wants us to rejoice in these trials because they are for His glory. He wants us to continue to do what we know is right. We can trust our lives to the one who created us, and who has the power to overcome all things. His promise is to never fail us. Spring will return and warm up this little reader, and happiness will return for us as well. Keep walking in faith, knowing God loves you, He is with you, and His glory will be revealed through your circumstance.
