“You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Psalm 16:11 English Standard Version
As I walked down the stairs from my bedroom to the main floor of the house, I noticed a smiley face sticker on the window. This particular window is above the front door, and is located very high near our ceiling. I cannot get the sticker off of the window without climbing on a ladder and using a long tool.
At first, I was annoyed that my son had thrown it up there, but now the image has grown on me. Each morning as I walk down the stairs, I am greeted by the yellow happy face. It is almost as if it wants to say, “Good morning! It is going to be a great day, so smile!”
During the season of Lent, we focus on repentance and what Christ has given for us. It is supposed to be a somber time of self-reflection, leading up to the joy of Easter and the resurrection. That does not mean, however, that each day we need to wear a burlap sack over our head and look dismal.
The world may also get us down, while simultaneously promising earthly “stuff” that can make us happy. We often fall into the trap of thinking that God does not have our best interests at heart, as we continue to fail, get hurt, or feel unimportant. We may struggle with what our path in life should be, and whether God really cares.
We forget that God actually wants us to smile; and to have an awesome day, a wonderful week, a fabulous year, and a joyful life. In His presence there is true joy.
My prayer today is that you find that happy face – whether it is the sun peeking through the clouds, a friendly stranger, or a dog unabashedly wagging its tail and licking your face….and that you take the time to smile!
