Windshields

. . . and God’s Word.

When you live in Colorado Springs, you can be sure that you will need to get your car windshield repaired, or replaced regularly. Whether the gravel laid upon icy roads kicks up and chips the glass, or a hailstone cracks or shatters it, car windows don’t stay pristine for long. It can be especially frustrating when you hear that unmistakable “dink” indicating a fresh chink in your shield just as you’re leaving the auto glass shop (just ask me how I know).

There are many things in this life that are as fragile as a windshield in Colorado Springs. There are few things that are sure to last on this earth.

So, what can we be sure will never shatter on us?

“Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
    you have established the earth, and it stands fast.
 By your appointment they stand this day,
    for all things are your servants.

Psalm 119:89-91 New International Version

What the God of the universe utters, will stand forever. What He promises, will be upheld. Everything is maintained by His word.

We can observe the creation around us that He established and sustains, and we can rest in His control over its lifespan and our own. We see the faithful heavens roll out like clockwork the course He set for them. What’s more, we have the written words of God at our fingertips every day! What a mind-blowing gift of grace to be able to study it and find out for ourselves what will remain forever and never be broken.

Oh, Lord, in this uncertain world of gravel and hailstones, may we trust in Your Word and stand confidently upon it. May we search out what You speak to us in it, and serve you according to it, the way the rest of creation does every day. Your Word endures forever! Amen!
